Mario Smith or Mario Avilez (photo), depending on which newspaper you read, was a 14-year-old 7th-grade boy who was shot to death Tuesday night in Brooklyn after two young women began arguing and a young man, who so far has escaped, put a gun into the volatile situation. Mario was an apparent innocent bystander.
The NY Times did a big takeout on the shooting Thursday; the story has more details on the shooting and quotes from Mario's family and friends. He was the latest in an epidemic of teenagers who've been shot to death in 2008.
The Daily News, meanwhile, ran an article featuring relatives of Mario who urged his killer to "have a heart" and turn himself in. As of this writing, no one has been arrested for Mario's death.
