February 21st -- Extra! The murder of Larry Davis, late '80s criminal who engaged in shoot-out with police...

Larry_davi The notorious Larry Davis, a 41-year-old black male, is dead, stabbed to death by another inmate in the Shawangunk Correctional Facility in Ulster County, the NY Times and others reported today. Davis became a folk hero to some in 1986 after he shot his way out of an apartment surrounded by 20 NYC police officers. Davis wounded six of the officers but escaped and was at large for 17 days before being captured.

He gave himself up after taking a family hostage and, when he emerged, some people in the street chanted his name as swaggered away. He was later acquitted of attempted murder for firing at nine cops in a verdict that then-Mayor Koch called "horrifying." Davis eventually was convicted for murdering a rival drug dealer and was serving a sentence of 25 years to life.

February 21st -- 0 fresh murders & more on wife who shot ex-cop...

Barbara_sheehan Reports have surfaced that Barbara Sheehan, the wife of a retired NYC cop who killed her husband after he'd allegedly physically abused her for years, apparently shot Ray Sheehan as many as 11 times using both of his guns, a Glock and a .38 caliber revolver, according to a report in the NY Daily News. Ray Sheehan was shaving at the time and the bullets fired into his back hit every one of his major organs, The News reported.

Barbara Sheehan is being held without bail and faces 25 years to life. Her father and some neighbors have come forward to say that she'd been phsycially abused by Ray Sheehan for years and that he'd broken her nose the night before she killed him. The case is reminiscent of my first book which revolves around a troubled marriage, an abusive cop and murder.

February 16th -- Extra! Cops make arrest in therapist murder...

Faughey A 39-year-old male from Queens has been arrested in connection with the murder of Upper East Side therapist Dr. Kathryn Faughey, according to NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly. It seems from initial reports that David Tarloff, the person arrested, was not a patient of Dr. Faughey but rather had some connection to her officemate, Dr. Kent Shinbach who was also injured in the attack.

Kelly said in a news conference that detectives pulled Tarloff in for questioning this morning after finding one of his fingerprints on the handle of the two suitcases carried to the therapist's office by the attacker. Tarloff had been arrested on February 1st after scuffling with a security guard at St. John's Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway. Under questioning, Tarloff allegedly placed himself at the bloody crime scene and told cops that he was angry with Dr. Shinbach for having him committed to a mental institution. Whether or not that is true remains to be seen. There were also reports that Tarloff had been a patient of Dr. Shinbach's more than a dozen years ago.

February 11th -- 0 fresh murders....

Amd_nesha A friend of Talib Stewart, the 25-year-old black transvestite stabbed to death in the Bronx Saturday morning, told The News that his friend was no prostitute. "Nesha was a friend of the whole building - a really nice person who didn't deserve that," downstairs neighbor Steven Bamberg, 45, told the News. "I called him 'her' out of respect."

Police have arrested 37-year-old Steven McMillian of Yonkers. He'd recently gotten out of prison after spending years inside on a drug charge, cops said.

Stewart's grandmother, Evelyn Stewart, told the News: "I've always been close to him. I didn't care what he was."

The Post covered the murder in a brief.

February 9th -- 0 fresh murders for 3rd day in row....

All is blessedly quiet.

********************************************************************

Doctor_under_arrest Meanwhile, the indictment was unsealed yesterday and there was a press conference in the case of the Queens doctor who allegedly hired a relative to kill her dentist husband last year. The most startling part of the indictment is that Dr. Mazoltuv Borukhova -- allegedly furious that her husband Dr. Daniel Malakov had won custody of the couple's young daughter -- exchanged 91 cell phone calls with the alleged hit man in the two weeks leading up to the dentist's murder. Please see NY Times article (photo left).

Cell phone calls have become powerful evidence in criminal cases all over the country. Even though the calls are not a smoking gun per se, any jury will know what to make of that type of unusual cell phone pattern.

Death_of_a_dream It's not just the pattern of calls but also that cell phone calls can pinpoint where the person is making the calls from. Paul Cortez, a yoga devotee who last year was convicted of killing NYC dancer Catherine Woods (Note: this is suject of my next book "Death of a Dream" that will be published at the end of March.) was at least partially found guilty because his cell phones showed that he was lying when he told police he was nowhere near Catherine's apartment at the time of her murder. The prosecutor was able to show that Paul got closer and closer to her apartment at the time of the murder and then did not make a single phone call in the 30 minutes the murder occurred. Definitive? Maybe not but very damning.

One more note about cell phones. I am now covering the case of a woman who vanished after visiting her husband's house. One interesting piece of evidence is that, when her abandoned minivan was located, her cell phone battery had been removed. That is the only way to prevent police from tracking a cell phone which emits a signal even when turned off. Take the battery out and you're home free. When police detained the missing woman's husband in that case and looked in his fanny pack, they say he had removed the battery from his cell phone. Coincidence? The trial is continuing.

February 8th -- 0 fresh murders but an arrest in dentist murder...

Dentist190 There was an arrest yesterday in one of the most high-profile murders of 2007 -- the playground slaying of a dentist who was gunned down while exchanging custody of his 4-year-old daughter with his estranged wife (photo left). A hit man appeared during the exchange and shot the dentist three times in the chest. Unfortunately for the hit man, he dropped his home-made silencer at the scene and left his fingerprints on it, according to police. It turned out that the hitman was related to a dentist's estranged wife, who happens to be a doctor. The hit man was arrested last year.

Yesterday, police arrested the dentist's bitterly estranged wife, Dr. Mazoltuv Borukhova who fortunately goes by the name of Marina. Marina and her family were incensed after her husband Dr. Daniel Malakov won custody of the couple's 4-year-old daughter. Marina had accused her husband of physically abusing her and forcing her to clean the house "with my tongue."

Her husband won custody anyway and Marina's mother reportedly told his relatives: "You will all pay for this." Both families are Bukharan Jews who emigrated from Uzbekistan and settled in Queens, according to the NY Times which put the story on B1. The News and the Post also gave the story big play.

February 7th -- 0 fresh murders...

Neville_ward_family_2 While there are no new murders to report, the parents of Neville Ward, an 18-year-old black youth shot in the head in early January, told The Daily News yesterday that they continue to get threatening phone calls from people they suspect are in a Far Rockaway gang. Judy and Neville Ward Sr. allege their son was murdered after he refused to join the local gang. Taquan Stotts, 15, and Rashaun Ferguson, 13, the two youths arrested in connection with Neville Ward's murder, pleaded not guilty yesterday at their arraignment. The most extensive reporting on Neville's murder has been in Newsday. (photo left)

The January Report -- 36 dead in 1st month of 2008...

Thirty-six people were murdered in New York City in the first month of the New Year.

(According to statistics put out by the NYPD, the murder rate is running significantly higher this year than last. The NYPD has only released statistics for the first 28 days of this year but in those 28 days, the NYPD counts 30 murders versus only 21 in the same period last year, an increase of more than 40 percent.)

I calculated my own 31-day figure after closely reading the three city daily newspapers every day and cataloguing each reported murder. I decided to break down the statistics by various categories but my overall finding – based on the placement of news stories and follow-ups – is that none of murders captured the city’s attention as some infamous murders have in the past.

The biggest stories involving death – not necessarily murder -- this month were that of actor Heath Ledger and the “dead man rolling” caper. Ledger’s death made news because he was famous while the tale of two Hell’s Kitchen friends rolling a dead third friend to a check-cashing outlet to make a payday made news because it was, on many levels, so absurd.

The only murder to make Page One was the hit & run death of Florence Cioffi, a 59-year-old white woman, who was killed by a Mercedes SUV allegedly driven by Wall Street Executive George Anderson. Often the murders were reported in small briefs far back in the news ‘hole.’

That brings us to some statistics. Ms. Cioffi was one of only four women murdered in January. Two others – Galbane Linkouke and Maribel Hernandez – allegedly were killed by their boyfriends while the fourth, Helen Abbot, a 69-year-old black woman, was sexually assaulted and strangled in her East Harlem apartment. No arrest has been made in Ms. Abbot’s murder.

Obviously, that means that 32 of the murder victims were men.

Breaking down the figures first by race: 18 of the victims were of unknown ethnicity or race (I only included the race if I was absolutely certain.); 12 victims were black; 5 were Hispanic and 1 was white.

Where the murders occurred: 11 were killed in the Bronx; 9 in Queens; 9 in Manhattan; 6 in Brooklyn, and 1 in Staten Island.

Age: 15 of the departed were in their 20s;10 were in their 30s; 3 were teenagers; 2 were in their 40s; 2 were in their 50s; 1 was in her 60s; 1 male was 80; 2 were of unknown age.

Method of death: 18 were shot. (2 men were killed by police in apparently justified homicides but are included here); 10 were stabbed; 4 people were beaten; 2 were vehicular homicides;1 was by an unknown method; 1 – a woman – was shot and stabbed.

One note: these are not official numbers but the numbers put out by the police is very close. Through January 27th, the NYPD reported 30 murders but, according to my figures, there were 5 additional murders from January 28th through the end of the month which means we’re, pardon the expression, nearly dead even.

I welcome your comments.

January 28th -- 2 dead...

Amd_princefamily Joseph Prince, a 30-year-old black man, was shot to death early Sunday morning in Long Island City, Queens, after a party to celebrate a friend's release from prison erupted in a bottle-throwing fight, according to NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly. The party had been at the LaFamilia Bar and Restaurant on 44th Drive but at 5 a.m., twenty people spilled out into the street and began throwing bottles at one another.

Someone shot Prince, a construction worker and the father of two young children, in the head. No arrests. "He has two beautiful kids, and they love him to death," Prince's grandmother Joann Prince told The Daily News. "Oh God, I don't know how to tell them."

The News ran the story on page 15 while The Times and The Post turned it into a brief.

***********************************************************************

The passenger of a car driven by Marcelo Uribe, 21, was killed early Sunday morning when Uribe lost control of the car and it slammed into a tree near Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, according to reports in all three city newspapers. The Times, in a brief, reported that Uribe, of Sleepy Hollow, NY, was charged with DWI and manslaughter. A second passenger was also injured but reported to be in stable condition at St. Barnabas Hospital. The name of the departed was not revealed. The News and Post also ran the item in their briefs section.

It is the second time in the last few days that a driver has killed somone in NYC. The first incident occurred last week when a Wall Street CEO ran down a woman crossing Water Street in lower Manhattan.

January 26th -- 0 fresh murders but hit & run death makes Page One...

Cioffi The hit & run death of Florence Cioffi, the 59-year-old white woman struck & killed on Water Street in lower Manhattan late Thursday night, became the first murder of 2008 to make the front page. The Daily News led its Saturday edition with the story of Cioffit being run down by a black Mercedes SUV driven by George Anderson, the founder and CEO of Enterprise Engineering.

Anderson, on his way home from a NY Rangers hockey game, initially kept going after hitting Cioffi but returned twenty minutes later. Upon his return, he refused a Breathalyzer test but, according to Assistant Manhattan District Attorney Erin LaFarge, Anderson eyes were bloodshot and his speech was slurred. He was charged with vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident, driving while intoxicated and criminally negligent homicide. He was released on $250,000 bond.

The NY Times also put the story on B1 while the Post ran it further inside on page 11. Both newspapers mentioned how Cioffi had narrowly escaped death on 9/11 when she went out for coffee just prior to the planes hitting the first WTC tower.
