February 17th -- 2 dead & more on therapist murder arrest...
Anna Matias, a 14-year-old Latina youth, was strangled, stripped of her clothing and then dumped in a building furnace yesterday by her 36-year-old father who allegedly confessed to Anna's murder, according to police.
Miguel Matias, who has a history of mental problems, allegedly called 911 to report that he'd killed his daughter because he caught her chatting to a boy on his computer. He'd once tried to kill Anna and one of her two younger brothers by dousing the family car with gasoline. His wife Jocelyn then left him and took the children, according to a page 10 story in the Daily News (photo left is of a memorial left at the building where Anna died.) The Times carried the story on B3.
The murder occurred at a building on Walton Avenue in the Highbridge section of the Bronx where Miguel was the buiding superintendent. Anna was visiting him. A teenager who knew Anna told The News: "Everybody loved Anna. She was really nice. She was quiet but very popular."

The big front page news in all the NYC newspapers continues to be the arrest of Queens resident David Tarloff for slashing to death Upper East Side therapist Dr. Kathryn Faughey last week. Tarloff reportedly is mentally ill and his own mother supposedly has a restraining order against him.
At an arraignment on Sunday, Tarloff was on a roll, telling the judge he was hungry and that his Legal Aid lawyer was not a lawyer. To read more on the arraignment, go to the WINS 1010 Radio website.
Tarloff, 39, allegedly bore a longtime grudge against Dr. Kent Shinbach, Dr. Faughey's officemate. According to the stories, Tarloff hoped to rob Shinbach, abduct his own mother from a nursing home, and make a break for Hawaii. That is why he carried with him two suitcases, one of them containing adult diapers, according to police.
He was tracked down after his finger and palm prints were located on the handle of a suitcase. The case is getting extensive coverage in NYC with even the Times putting it on page one, just below the fold. The News and Post also have extensive sidebars on Tarloff's story and interviews with his neighbors.
